Intertextuality in the Tafsir Ya Ayyuha Al-Lazina Amanu by Syaikh Abdul Latief Syakur

This study examines the intertextual approach of Syaikh Abdul Latief Syakur in his Tafsir Yā Ayyuha Al-Lażīna Āmanū, focusing on how he engages with classical Islamic sources and contextualizes them within his socio-historical milieu. The library research method includes codicological analysis of the manuscript to examine its physical attributes, while also analyzing the textual connections between Tafsir Yā Ayyuha Al-Lażīna Āmanū and its primary intertextual sources. Key findings highlight three main intertextual strategies in Syaikh Abdul Latief Syakur’s work: transformation, where classical interpretations are adapted to address ethical and linguistic nuances; expansion, where Qur’anic terms are recontextualized to reflect universal Islamic principles; and parallelism, which identifies recurring themes and structures across verses to illustrate the coherence of Qur’anic discourse. The study also explores the use of primary sources, including Anwār al-Tanzīl wa Asrār al-Takwīl by al-Baidlawi, Tanwīr al-Miqbās min Tafsīr Ibn ‘Abbās, and references to the Torah, illustrating how these works informed his interpretations. By integrating these sources with his unique scholarly perspective, Syaikh Abdul Latief Syakur provides a tafsir that bridges classical traditions and contemporary concerns.

Exploring Qur’anic Coherence Through Salwa El-Awa’s Pragmatic Framework

This study examines Salwa El-Awa's pragmatic approach to the structural and thematic coherence of the Qur’an, as outlined in her work Textual Relations in the Qur’an: Relevance, Coherence, and Structure. Employing a qualitative and descriptive-analytical methodology, this research explores the theories of coherence and relevance to understand the role of paragraph markers in establishing thematic and structural relationships between verses. The analysis focuses on two chapters, Surah al-Ahzab and Surah al-Qiyamah, to identify how these markers delineate paragraph boundaries and ensure the relevance of verses to the overarching message. The findings reveal that Salwa El-Awa's approach surpasses classical methods such as munasabah, which are limited to linear connections between verses, and addresses the shortcomings of modern approaches that often overlook the thematic relevance of textual components. Paragraph markers identified by Salwa elucidate structural relationships within the chapters, even when verses appear thematically unrelated. Furthermore, this study underscores the importance of integrating the internal textual context of the Qur’an with historical, social, and cultural dimensions to enhance interpretive depth.

Intertextuality in Nusantara Qur’anic Exegesis: A Study of Tafsīr al-Itqān fī Ma’ānī Umm al-Qur’ān by KH. Ahmad Haris Shadaqah

This article analyzes the intertextual characteristics of Tafsīr al-Itqān fī Ma’ānī Umm al-Qur’ān by KH. Ahmad Haris Shadaqah, a prominent Nusantara scholar. The study examines how Shadaqah extensively integrates classical texts, such as Ḥashiyah al-Ṣāwi ‘ala al-Jalālayn, Marāh Labīd al-Nawāwi, Tafsīr Ibn Kathīr, Anwār al-Tanzīl Wa Asrār al-Ta’wīl, and Mafātīḥ al-Ghayb, as well as Matn al-Ḥikam and Syarḥ al-Ḥikam, to produce a Javanese-language tafsir. Employing Julia Kristeva’s theory of intertextuality, this qualitative study combines literature review and fieldwork to identify intertextual patterns, including transformation, modification, haplology, expansion, and existence. The findings reveal that Shadaqah’s tafsir bridges classical Islamic thought and local cultural contexts, emphasizing the significance of local languages in the development of Qur’anic exegesis. This research highlights the adaptability of Islamic scholarly traditions in addressing contemporary and regional needs, contributing to the broader discourse on intertextuality and Qur’anic studies.

Differentiation Strategies in Qur'an Memorization: A Case Study at Daarul Yusr Islamic Boarding School

The rapid growth of Islamic education in Indonesia, particularly in the tahfidz Al-Qur'an program, has seen significant progress, with more than 25,000 educational institutions registered by 2024. However, not all institutions produce high-quality hafidz, largely due to the diverse abilities of students, which are influenced by their educational backgrounds and memorization methods. This study focuses on the strategies employed by students in memorizing the Qur'an and the practical implementation of these strategies. The research aims to identify effective memorization methods in tahfidz programs and evaluate their impact on the quality of memorization. Using a qualitative approach with a case study design at the Daarul Yusr Al-Qur'an Islamic Boarding School, data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation, then analyzed thematically. The findings reveal that 10 students successfully memorized 30 juz of the Qur'an. Additionally, the memorization process contributed to enhancing students' discipline and self-confidence. These results affirm that employing a differentiated approach in memorization not only improves the quality of memorization but also positively influences students' character. This study is expected to serve as a reference for Islamic educational institutions in addressing challenges in tahfidz education and developing curricula tailored to individual student needs.

Israf and Tabzir in Tafsir Al-Misbah: The Understanding of Pidie Jaya Community Leaders and Its Implications for Consumption in Aceh

Modernization has shifted Acehnese society from simplicity to consumerism. In Islam, excessive consumption is classified as israf (overspending on permissible matters) and tabzir (wasting wealth on non-beneficial purposes). Quraish Shihab’s Tafsir Al-Misbah highlights their role in social inequality and spiritual degradation. This study employs a qualitative descriptive-interpretative approach, utilizing library research and semi-structured interviews with three community leaders in Pidie Jaya. Data were analyzed thematically and interpretatively, comparing respondents’ views with Tafsir Al-Misbah. The findings indicate that the respondents’ understanding aligns with Quraish Shihab’s exegesis, although they place greater emphasis on economic aspects over spiritual dimensions. This awareness helps prevent a status-driven consumer culture in Aceh, confirming that balanced consumption is integral to the principle of hifzul mal (preserving wealth) in Islam. However, strong social norms promote excessive spending, necessitating educational strategies through religious institutions, formal education, and social media to cultivate ethical consumption habits in line with Islamic values.

Sex Dolls in Islamic Thought: A Qur’anic and Maqasidic Analysis of Sexuality and Tamatsil

The increasing use of sex dolls raises ethical, social, and religious concerns, particularly in Islamic discourse. While Islamic scholarship has extensively discussed sexuality and statues (tamatsil), there remains a research gap in analyzing their intersection within modern technology. This study examines the permissibility of sex dolls within Islamic ethics and law by integrating Qur’anic interpretation and Maqasid al-Shariah. A qualitative hermeneutical and thematic (tafsir maudhu’i) approach is employed to analyze Surah Al-Ma'arij (70:29-31), Surah Saba’ (34:13), and Surah Al-Anbiya' (21:52). Classical and contemporary exegeses, along with fatwas from Dar al-Ifta' Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and Indonesia, provide legal insights. Findings indicate that sex dolls contradict Islamic ethical principles, particularly hifz al-‘ird (preserving dignity), hifz an-nasl (preserving lineage), and hifz al-aql (preserving intellect). Fatwas classify sex dolls as haram due to their potential to normalize unethical behavior and disrupt marital relationships.

Gamophobia in Contemporary Society: An Integrative Analysis of Qur’anic Exegesis and Marital Psychology through Tafsir Al-Munir

The rapid transformation of social and cultural values has significantly altered individual perceptions of marriage, leading to the emergence of gamophobia—an excessive fear of marriage and long-term commitment. This phenomenon has become increasingly prevalent among younger generations, influenced by rising divorce rates, economic uncertainty, and media exposure that portrays negative representations of marriage. This study aims to identify the underlying factors contributing to gamophobia and propose Qur’anic-based solutions as interpreted in Tafsir Al-Munir by Wahbah Az-Zuhaili. Using a qualitative approach through library research and thematic exegesis analysis (tafsir maudhu’i), this study examines gamophobia from the perspectives of marital psychology and Islamic studies. The findings reveal three primary factors triggering gamophobia: (1) fear of infidelity due to past experiences of betrayal, (2) concerns about the inability to establish a stable household, and (3) emotional unpreparedness in handling marital conflicts and commitments. Unlike previous studies that predominantly focus on psychological aspects, this research integrates Islamic values as solutions, including choosing a partner with effective conflict resolution skills, practicing tawakkul (trust in Allah) after making efforts, and fostering positive perceptions of divine decree. By employing a multidisciplinary approach that bridges marital psychology and Qur’anic exegesis, this study highlights that gamophobia can be mitigated through a deeper understanding of Islamic teachings, spiritual resilience, and enhanced emotional and mental preparedness for marriage.

The Philosophy of Mountains in the Qur’an and Its Lessons on Stability, Resilience, and Environmental Ethics

The Qur’an presents mountains not only as geological formations but as profound symbols of cosmic balance (mīzān), spiritual resilience, and divine wisdom. This study examines their philosophical significance by integrating classical and modern Qur’anic exegesis (tafsir) with contemporary environmental ethics and scientific perspectives. Employing a qualitative approach with thematic and comparative tafsir analysis, this research explores Qur’anic references to mountains (jabal, rawāsi, ṭūr) through interpretations by Al-Tabari, Ibn Kathir, Al-Razi, and M. Quraish Shihab. Findings indicate that mountains function as both stabilizers of the earth and metaphors for human endurance, patience, and revelation. Their Qur’anic depiction aligns with the concept of mīzān (divine balance), illustrating the interconnectedness between natural order and moral responsibility. Additionally, the study emphasizes human stewardship (khalīfah fil ard’) and ethical responsibility toward nature, drawing links between Islamic teachings and contemporary sustainability discourse. By bridging scriptural interpretation with ecological thought, this study underscores how the Qur’anic philosophy of mountains provides ethical insights into environmental conservation.

This study examines the communal recitation of Surah Al-Fath within the ngeropok tradition in Kepandean Kidul, Serang, as a form of Living Qur’an practice deeply rooted in the religious and cultural fabric of Banten’s Muslim community. Held during the Maulid al-Nabi celebration, the ngeropok ritual merges devotional worship with a symbolic tribute to the legacy of the Banten Sultanate. Adopting a qualitative case study approach, this research draws on participatory observation, in-depth interviews with religious figures and community members, and documentation of cultural artifacts. Thematic analysis, guided by the Miles and Huberman framework. Findings indicate that the recitation of Surah Al-Fath serves not only as a spiritual practice but also as a tafsīr praksis—a lived interpretation of the Qur’an that reinforces collective memory, social cohesion, and local Islamic identity. Despite adaptations in the digital era, such as evolving modes of communication and charitable giving, the tradition retains its core values of gratitude, unity, and spiritual reverence. This study underscores how local Islamic traditions like ngeropok embody dynamic expressions of sacred texts, continually reinterpreted in response to contemporary cultural and social contexts.
